Salsa Basic Step

Overview

The Salsa Basic Movement consists of a combination of alternating forward and backwards rock steps in Closed Position, to the count of "Quick-Quick Slow, Quick-Quick Slow". For both man and lady, the right foot will break back, and the left foot will break forward.

The figure can be danced without any turn (as shown), or with up to 1/4 turn left per measure. The "Slow" count can be a closing step (as shown), or it can be taken forward, back, or to the side.

When watching the video clip, note the action of the man's left (lady's right) arm and hand. It swings down and inward as the man rocks forward, and then returns to the normal position as he rocks back.

Underarm Turn Right

Overview

There are many ways to dance an underarm turn in Salsa. This is the most basic of all turns, danced by the lady. It is an essential part of any Salsa dancer's repertoire.

The lady takes the turn in place of her forward rock step. She begins and ends facing the man, taking one full turn over the course of three steps (LRL), counted Quick-Quick-Slow. She will pass under the arm sometime between the Quick and the Slow count.

The man leads the underarm turn as he takes his back rock. The turn is lead by raising his left hand to approximately her eye level, and then circling the hand around her head in a clockwise direction.

Cross-Body Lead

Overview

Yet another essential part of the Salsa dancer's repertoire, the Cross Body Lead is a turning version of the basic step, giving dancers more liberty to move freely around the dance floor.

The Cross Body Lead is normally danced with a total of 1/2 turn to the left, but most interesting is the difference of timing between the man and lady's turn: The man will first turn away from the lady, and she will turn later. This results in the lady passing briefly in front of the man, giving the Cross Body Lead its name.

Fig.1 - Cross Body Position
Man turns away from lady, leading her to dance in front of his body from his right side to his left.
